There are a couple of things to be aware of when you have low porosity hair to prevent dry hair, frizz and breakage:
- Low porosity hair already contains more than enough protein. Therefore, you do not ant to be adding more protein onto your hair in your hair care routine. Using products like protein treatments and conditioners can overload your hair with protein causing it to feel dry and brittle. Therefore, check your products for protein ingredients and remove those from your routine.
- This porosity type really struggles to absorb moisture due to its super strong structure. Therefore, deep moisture masks and deep conditioner are going to be super useful to help boost moisture into the hair strands. You can apply these masks onto your hair, put a shower cap over your head and then wrap everything up in a towel. This method should help generate heat to the hair that will help open up the cuticle and allow the strands to absorb more moisture.
- It is important to only use sealing oils on low porosity hair. These include oils like: Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil and Squalane. Therefore, be sure you are using the correct type of oil for your pre-poo, sealant or even as ingredients in any other DIY recipe. You can also opt to use humectants like Aloe Vera to help hydrate the hair as well.
- Lastly, it is important to remember that dry and damaged ends are usually a sign of high porosity hair. Therefore, perhaps do the porosity test again just to be sure you have examined your porosity correctly. You may find half your hair is high porosity and half your hair is low porosity, or that your hair is actually high porosity. If so, you would have to take a different path in how to care for your hair. As you go through your hair care journey, you will find your porosity can change, therefore regular porosity tests are important to help monitor any changes!
