Oils are natural heat protectant as it helps prevent the drying effect that heat styling tools have on your hair. For gentle blow drying like taught in the Lab any oil can work. If you aim to use heat styling tools, aim for an oil with a smoke point higher than the temperature you'll be using for styling. In general it means 200-230 °C or above. The smoke point of oils is listed in our Ultimate Guide of Hair Oils.
** If you aim to do a super heat intensive hair styling (which we recommend to keep for special occasions only) it is likely best to use a silicone serum or conditioner which provide a stronger heat protection and moisture retention. It will still be damaging but much less.
