Regarding the 'no-silicones' trend, some companies will really only select biodegradable ingredients but some choose to use as replacement ingredients like Synthetic Esters and Ethers or acrylates that are marketed as silicone alternatives but they may not be biodegradable and can accumulate in the environment similarly to silicones. Regarding sulfates, it's the same battle. Some companies really switch up for better alternatives and some others use harsh surfactants that don't contain sulfates to get the label but the issue is just exactly the same. In the end, it all comes down to understanding what we purchase to make sure that the products we choose both serve our hair and our ethical purpose.
